How much time does it take to be able to read simple sentences? Why some letters appear different when I see them in the signs around and when I see them in a short note that someone has written to me? Why are there words that sound slightly different than the way they are written? …

These and other are the questions people often ask themselves when they face the event of learning Bulgarian language.

So here is this beautiful Bulgarian alphabet (Cyrillic) and there are some tips of how to get through it and understand it easier, especially for those already familiar with the Latin alphabet.

А Б В Г Д Е Ж З И Й К Л М Н О П Р С Т У Ф Х Ц Ч Ш Щ Ъ ь Ю Я

А К М О Т

В Е Н Р С У Х

Here in the 1st two lines we have letters which are similar in the way we write them and some of them in the way we pronounce them in both alphabets (as sounds).

Б Г Д З И П Ф

Й Л Ж Ц Ч Ш Щ Ъ Ю Я

Here are these two lines which show you that sounds might be similar but letters written in a different way and especially the last ones, where we are introduced to letters with totally unfamiliar outlook (once again, speaking only about people familiar only with the Latin alphabet).

If you have got interested in learning Bulgarian, here are some links where you could read a little bit more about history of the language and some interesting facts.

www.omniglot.com/writing/bulgarian.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarian_language

www.studybulgarian.com/Bulgarian%20alphabet.htm

http://indoeuro.bizland.com/project/script/cyril.html

Once memorized, letters are easy to use in writing and reading, because in more than 80% of the cases the letter represents the sound without any changes. What is the trouble then?! Well, maybe with the other, about 20% when slight changes appear.

If you have already learned the alphabet and you are able to read some words, let me give you some examples.

вторник (ftornik) -Tuesday in the pairs of consonant sounds (v-f)

хляб (hljap) – bread (b-p) , (d-t) – voiced ones become voiceless.

мед (met) – honey

voiced – b, v, g, d , etc. voiceless – p, f, k, t, etc.

The practical explanation is that we tend to pronounce voiceless (not so strong) consonants instead of voiced ones because it is easier and especially when we have several consonants (which is typical for Slavic languages) in one syllable (all of them together).

These and some other examples in Bulgarian language are to show, as in almost every other language, that it is made not only to confuse people but to serve them because it could pretty much adjust to the way we want or would like to have it.

Do you want to know about some secrets? …®

If you like challenges and if you like exploring new things and finding out about things which might seem weird or inexpressively incomprehensible, yet achievable, there you are! Get familiar and dig into one of the most interesting languages in the world – Bulgarian language.

I truly enjoy teaching Bulgarian language, since the moment I started doing it! As a linguist, it has always been a great pleasure for me to work with different languages and to admire the incredible work of God who has created such a variety of languages and has given to men the ability to handle them!

How does this work? It is a secret, an obvious secret, though.

So, here, having talked to God, I decided that I could tell you few ways to discover part of this secret through Bulgarian language…

Let me be very practical, because this is only the beginning of the story, so most probably I shall continue with many more stories and explanations…

Anyway, my point is, once you have learned a verb in Bulgarian, it might help you a lot in your actions…

Once you have learned the word „не” which means “no”, it might give you the chance to come to something more… and if combine them verb + „не”= to a whole conclusion

( word formation – that’s how we form substantives , nouns )

Пие-не drinking

Яде-не eating

Чете-не reading

Пуше-не smoking

Гледа-не watching

………….

Well, someone has been very negative there and has tried to deny all kind of action! Don’t blame these people that now and then, they tend to be somewhat fainéants…☺

To be continued…☺®
